Fall 2026

Ten classes running this fall, from single day intro sessions to a multi-week backcountry course.

OUL1021 credit

Introduction to Backpacking

Students hiking a backcountry trail with full backpacking packs near a rock formation

Learn to plan, pack, and survive a multi-night trip in the mountains.

Learn more

You will pick gear, plan meals, and get comfortable moving through the backcountry, then put it all together on a real 2- to 3-night backpacking trip. No experience needed, just good boots and a willingness to carry a pack.

OUL1061 credit

Stand Up Paddleboarding

A student paddleboarding on a mountain lake with a dog on the board

Get on a board and learn to paddle, balance, and stay safe on the water.

Learn more

Covers the real basics of SUP: how the board and paddle work, balance and control, and water safety, following the American Canoe Association's SUP curriculum. Field days happen out on the water, not just in a classroom.

OUL1081 credit

Rock Climbing I

A student rock climbing on a cliff face overlooking a canyon

Top rope climbing basics: technique, safety, and real routes near campus.

Learn more

You will learn how top-rope climbing actually works, how to move on the wall, and how to stay safe while doing it. Two full field days take you out to real climbing areas close to CCU to put it into practice.

OUL1091 credit

Fly Fishing

A student fly fishing in a mountain stream with peaks in the background

Casting, gear, and reading the water, straight from the basics.

Learn more

Learn how to set up your gear, cast a fly line, and understand the bugs and stream life that make fish bite. A relaxed, hands-on way to spend a few afternoons outside.

OUL1192 credits

Field Natural History

Students on a ridgeline studying the surrounding terrain

A close look at Colorado's plants, animals, and geology in the field.

Learn more

You will spend time learning to actually notice what is around you: identifying plants and wildlife, reading the landscape, and understanding the ecosystems you are hiking through. Includes an overnight field session.

OUL1221 credit

Hiking Colorado Peaks

A group of students on a mountain summit holding a sign for La Plata Peak

Climb real Colorado peaks as a guided group, no experience required.

Learn more

You will hike several easy to moderate peaks with a group, learning trip planning, gear, and how to handle altitude along the way. It is as much about the conversations on the trail as the summit.

OUL1351 credit

Introduction to Canyoneering

A student rappelling down a red rock slot canyon

Rappel through real slot canyons with a guide, no experience needed.

Learn more

You will travel through two or three canyons with an instructor, learning rappelling, anchors, knots, and how to read weather and flash flood risk along the way. One of the most hands-on courses OLP offers.

OUL3032 credits

Wilderness Navigation

Students reading a map and pointing toward a landmark in the forest

Map, compass, and GPS skills for finding your way in the backcountry.

Learn more

Learn to plan a route, read terrain, and make good calls when the trail disappears. These are the core skills that make every other backcountry course easier.

OUL3182 credits

Rock Climbing III

A student lead climbing on an overhanging rock face

Advanced climbing: trad gear, multi-pitch routes, and leading a group.

Learn more

Building on Rock Climbing II, you will learn traditional gear placement, multi-pitch strategy, and how to manage risk while leading a group outdoors. Also covers teaching and facilitation skills for future OLP leaders.

Prerequisite: OUL208 or instructor permission, must lead sport routes 5.10a or higher.

OUL1313 creditsCancelled

Introduction to Ice Climbing

A student ice climbing a frozen waterfall with an ice tool

Your first time swinging an ice axe, on real, safe ice.

Learn more

Learn the basic skills and technique to safely climb low-grade ice on top rope. A great next step after rock climbing, or a fun first time out.

OUL1271 credit

Snowshoeing

A group photo on snowshoes in front of jagged snowy peaks

Explore the Rockies on snowshoes. Gear is provided.

Learn more

Learn technique for flat ground, climbing, and descending on and off trail, plus how to handle cold weather safely. Snowshoes are provided, just bring warm layers.

OUL2022 credits

Facilitation & Group Processing

Students discussing a map together on a canyon overlook

Learn to actually lead a group, not just take one on a trip.

Learn more

You will learn how to sequence an experience, build group trust, and guide meaningful reflection afterward, all through a Christ centered lens. Built for anyone who wants to lead, not just participate.

OUL2051 credit

Backcountry Ski & Snowboard

A skier making a turn in fresh powder in the backcountry

Move from resort riding to real backcountry terrain.

Learn more

Learn how to travel uphill efficiently, read variable snow, and plan a backcountry tour. You will need a strong intermediate or better ski or snowboard background to enroll.

Prerequisite: strong intermediate or better ski or snowboard background.

OUL2082 credits

Rock Climbing II

A student rock climbing above a canyon landscape

The next step: lead climbing, anchors, and rescue basics.

Learn more

You will learn to set and clean anchors, lead sport routes, and handle basic rescue situations, with plenty of field days to practice. Recent top-rope experience and solid belay skills are required.

Prerequisite: recent top rope experience and belay proficiency.

OUL2151 credit

Snow Climbing

A group of skiers skinning up a steep snow slope

Ice axe skills for steep snow, not just flat trails.

Learn more

Learn self-arrest, snow anchors, and how to move safely on steep snow with crampons and an ice axe. This is where hiking turns into real mountaineering.

OUL2251 credit

Snow Shelters & Winter Camping

Two students standing in a snow shelter they dug

Build your own shelter and sleep in it, snow and all.

Learn more

A 3-day, 2-night trip where you build and actually sleep in a snow shelter you made yourself, while learning cold weather gear and safety. Not for the faint of heart, but unforgettable.

OUL2271 credit

White Water Rafting

A rafting crew paddling through whitewater rapids

Half or full day trips through real Class II and III rapids.

Learn more

Guided instruction on moving water, from reading rapids to paddling as a team. No experience necessary, just a willingness to get a little wet.

OUL3083 credits

Avalanche Level 1

Two students digging a snow pit to assess avalanche danger

Learn to read snow, spot danger, and use a beacon.

Learn more

Covers terrain assessment, snowpack, weather, and companion rescue with a beacon, following American Avalanche Association guidelines. You will finish with an official Level 1 certification.

OUL3652 credits

Advanced Canyoneering

A student rappelling between narrow red rock canyon walls

Bigger canyons, harder rigging, more remote terrain.

Learn more

Builds on Canyoneering I with advanced GPS navigation, technical rigging, and rescue strategy in remote Utah canyons. A serious next step for students who loved OUL135.

Prerequisite: OUL135 or equivalent experience.
